"The Family Business - Where to Now?" - Seminars
24th August 2010
EQ and Thorntons LLP – both well known professional firms in the Tayside area are joining together to present the following free seminars:-
- 21 September at Discovery Point, Dundee
- 23 September at McDiarmid Park, Perth
- 28 September at Finavon Hotel, by Forfar
All the seminars will commence at 6.30pm for registration, presentation at 7pm, followed by refreshments.
Many businesses last for generations but most have an average lifespan of 10 years. Many of these don’t succeed and fail but many are either sold to a third party, or more importantly, transferred to the next generation of the family. Those that are successful and continue from one generation to the next can also be problematic especially if the succession is not planned.
These seminars will look at the legal and tax consequences of not getting it right at the same time as pointing people in the right direction as to all the things they should be thinking of whether or not they are selling their business or looking for the family to inherit.
Topics covered will include valuing what you have, what would happen if you had no will, identifying what you want to happen going forward, considering the spouse if you die before passing on the business, the old problem of dealing with the non-business family and trying to be fair to all members of the family, the substantial tax and legal implications of not getting it right, capital tax issues and protecting the family business against divorce settlements and death.
Keith Hopkins of EQ and Mike Blair of Thorntons will deliver these seminars and should you require further information or wish to book a place then please e-mail events@thorntons-law.co.uk or telephone Claire Ross – 01382 229111
