Summer Student Profile
Lynsay Carson - Summer Student 2008
Having completed my penultimate year at Dundee University, I was lucky enough to be successful in the interview process for a summer placement at EQ's Forfar office. I already had the experience of two placements, one at a local contracting firm and another as administrative assistant within the finance department of the Dundee division of a global company. I felt this was a prime opportunity for me to have first hand experience of working in an accountancy firm before embarking on the final year of my degree.
During my time at EQ I was mainly involved with accounts preparation, which involved bank reconciliations, analysis of debtors, creditors and fixed assets, as well as tax returns. I particularly liked the wide variety of work and I found a great sense of achievement in completing a job from start to finish. I also found it useful to be able to apply many of the concepts I had learnt at university to my everyday work. I gained a valuable experience in using many accountancy packages, including Sage, which will aid me in my future career.
The friendly atmosphere in the office enabled me to settle in quickly and instantly feel like part of the team. The staff were always on hand to answer questions, no matter how many I had. The positive feedback given by the managers was also encouraging and I had learnt a lot from their advice.
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement with EQ, and I was lucky enough to enjoy the staff BBQ, as well as a few "bacon roll events".
At the end of my placement I was offered a CA training contract within EQ due to commence once I graduate. I was delighted to accept this offer and look forward to returning next year. I now have further incentive to do well in fourth year and achieve my degree.
