Joanna Smith MSc CA, Manager in our Dundee office

Where and what did you study at University?

University of Dundee – MA Joint Honours History and Contemporary European Studies and then I went on to study a Masters, graduating with an MSc in Applied Computing.

Why did you choose a career in Accountancy?

I wasn’t sure of the career path I wanted to take after graduating however, I had some experience working in accountancy and realised what a good opportunity a career in this field could be.

Why did you choose to apply to EQ Accountants to complete your professional qualification?

I applied to EQ and joined them as an Accounts Assistant. After a few months in the role, I was fortunate enough to be offered a CA traineeship with the Firm.

What is a day in the life of a CA Trainee like?

It’s very varied as one minute you are processing personal tax for a small sole trader and the next you are preparing group audited accounts.

What did you enjoy most about being a CA Trainee at EQ?

I loved the variety of work – you gain so much experience in range of different areas and the people at EQ are so approachable, always willing to help.

What did you find the most surprising during your training with EQ?

The fact it isn’t all office based and you have a variety of travel opportunities. During my training, I carried out an audit in Shetland for 2 years running and travelled across the country to support clients with accounts preparation.

What 3 qualities do you think a CA Trainee needs to have if they are to be successful?

Hardworking, dedicated and self-motivated.

Do you have any advice for those interested in applying for our graduate training vacancies this year?

Be prepared for working hard. It’s not easy to balance full-time work with incredibly hard ICAS exams. You need to be fully committed to it however, it’s well worth it!
