Kelly Meiklejohn BAcc (Hons) CA, Supervisor in our Forfar Office

Where and what did you study at University?

Accountancy at University of Dundee.

Why did you choose a career in Accountancy?

I liked Maths at school so accountancy seemed like a good career option.

Why did you choose to apply to EQ Accountants to complete your professional qualification?

Having had no previous work experience in an accountancy firm, I joined EQ for 10 weeks as an intern in the summer prior to finishing University. I really enjoyed the experience so was delighted when I was offered a contract to complete my CA training the following year.

What is a day in the life of a CA Trainee like?

At EQ, they don’t departmentalise so every day is different; you are able to help complete tax returns, prepare accounts or even visit a clients premises to support with an audit.

What did you enjoy most about being a CA Trainee at EQ?

Having the opportunity to work in a variety of different areas. I also enjoyed the fact that, within EQ’s offices, there are Juniors, Seniors and Managers all sitting together which allows you to gain various perspectives and work with people with different levels of experience.

What did you find the most surprising during your training with EQ?

The level of responsibility you are given from day one. Over the years my responsibilities have increased – I now manage my own client portfolio and have progressed from Junior to Supervisor.

What 3 qualities do you think a CA Trainee needs to have if they are to be successful?

Determination, discipline and good communication.

Do you have any advice for those interested in applying for our graduate training vacancies this year?
