Robert Young FCCA – Principal Manager

Robert is a Principal Manager, based in our Forfar office. During his time at EQ, Robert has developed a varied client portfolio, specialising in Agriculture and Tax. He is head of our Private Client tax group and is also a key member of our Property Tax and EQ Agriculture teams.

We caught up with Robert to find out more about his experience from trainee to Principal Manager.

How did your EQ journey begin?
I had no idea what I wanted to do when I left school; I sort of stumbled into accountancy. I really wanted to get a job that would allow me to progress/further my skills and earn money at the same time. EQ had a fantastic reputation in the local area as a progressive firm of accountants so getting a job with the Firm was quite lucky.

I joined the Firm as an intern in 2003, studying towards my ACCA qualification which I attained in 2013 and I am now a Principal Manager.

What have you enjoyed most during your progression through the Firm?
When I was training there were a lot of other trainees, we all helped one another to progress and get through the exams. We had some great social nights and all got on really well. I also really enjoyed learning about the clients that the firm had, building relationships with the clients etc. This has helped me massively in my progression at the firm.

Since you started at EQ, how do you feel the Firm has evolved?
EQ has almost doubled in size since I started, this much larger firm has given me the opportunity to expand my skill base and to progress up through the ranks.  It has been a very exciting time to have been involved with EQ.

What would you say to someone thinking of applying to join EQ?
Do it! I have never looked back since joining the Firm and have progressed to Principal Manager at the tender age of 32! (I look much younger than this obviously.) Accountancy can open doors to almost any job in business and I have never regretted my decision to join EQ.

Our environment, whilst entrepreneurial and ambitious, has an incredibly friendly culture throughout as well as being supportive of all our staff. This culture enables us to assemble teams with the appropriate skills and experience to deliver what is required to our diverse and interesting client base. We’re always looking for experienced, qualified professionals to join our specialist teams of business advisers.
