A Day in the Life of a Bookkeeper

At EQ, we understand that juggling the financial and operational side of your business, at the same time as actually running the business, is not easy. That’s why we have a dedicated department called EQ Accounting, to offer our expertise and support to your day-to-day financial controls, to allow you to focus on running your business.

Our EQ Accounting team offer a range of services including payroll, VAT compliance, management accounts and for some clients, the full outsourcing of their financial record-keeping and provision of bookkeeping services.

As a bookkeeper, you’re responsible for keeping track of all your clients financial transactions, and producing relevant and reliable financial reports to help each client understand their position so they can manage their business more effectively. We asked a few of our EQ team, ‘What is a day in the life of an EQ bookkeeper like?’

“I’m definitely kept busy with a variety of clients from a large bakery, hotelier, antiques dealer to a sensor technology company with UK and US offices. This allows me to work with a variety of accounting packages, to develop my skills for a better understanding of bookkeeping. I’ve built up a good rapport with my clients over the years, and I am trusted with their sensitive and personal information. We get to go out to work on clients’ premises when the need arises – this helps you understand the business when you are out in their environment and dealing with their team. It’s often heard in EQ that ‘every day’s a school day’ so no question is a stupid question and I appreciate the assistance given by the rest of the team. We are all from different walks of life, but come together in our day-to-day work as well as our external events and nights out.”

“Everyday is different, which I thoroughly enjoy – I can be out at clients’ premises, working on bookkeeping, preparing VAT Returns and management accounts or providing some training and support to clients so they can do their own bookkeeping. Since joining EQ, I have been able to develop good relationships with my clients which has allowed me to move up to a supervisory position. I love the fact that the EQ team are all friendly, hardworking and keen to support one another – it makes your job easier when you have dedicated people around you.”

“I fell into bookkeeping when I started processing invoices and transactions in my previous job – but I soon realised I enjoyed doing it! Working in EQ is very busy, but it’s always fun and interesting. I have built good relationships with my clients as I am in regular contact with them via email and phone. Having an investigative mind, and working well under the pressure of deadlines helps you improve the service provided to clients. There is always someone there to assist if you need it and there is also plenty of on the job training to constantly improve your knowledge.”
