Rachel Matthew, Senior in our Dundee office

Where and what did you study at University?

Accounts with Finance at Dundee University.

Why did you choose a career in Accountancy?

Maths was my strong subject at school and I also really enjoyed business management, so thought an accountancy career would be a good fit for me! I also tried nursing for a year and quickly discovered that it was not for me!

Why did you choose to apply to EQ Accountants to complete your professional qualification?

I had heard good things about the Firm through University and from a friend of a friend who had previously worked at EQ. I had also completed a 3rd year summer placement at another accountancy Firm, however, at my interview for EQ, the people seemed so friendly – I decided EQ was the Firm for me.

What is a day in the life of a CA Trainee like?

Sometimes a day in the office can be rather stressful and then going home to even more work and study can seem like a never ending day. However, not every day is like this, in fact very few are. On the weeks leading up to exams, it can seem as though you will never return to normal – sociable – life. But once the exams are over, and hopefully passed, celebrations kick in and life returns to being much less stressful.

What did you enjoy most about being a CA Trainee at EQ?

The different opportunities and the variety – accounts, tax, audit etc. – keep the job from getting boring. And of course the people at EQ!

What did you find the most surprising during your training with EQ?

The speed at which the 3 years passed.

What 3 qualities do you think a CA Trainee needs to have if they are to be successful?

Motivation, ambition and good people skills.

Do you have any advice for those interested in applying for our graduate training vacancies this year?

Do some research into all of the Firms you are interested in and try and speak to the staff who work there to get a true view of the working environment.
