The latest CDO letter brings good news to the Dental sector

Chief Dental Officer, Tom Ferris, has written an open letter to the Dental sector confirming that as of Sunday 1 November, dental contractors (dentists and corporate dental bodies) will be able to provide a full range of dental treatments to NHS patients.

This follows on from the recent publication of the Scottish Dental Effectiveness Programme (SDCEP) ‘Review of Aerosol Generating Procedures in Dentistry’ that provided an understanding of risk management of COVID-19 transmission in dental settings.

Although it is agreed that a return to pre-COVID patient volumes will not be achievable under the current health protection measures, the letter does discuss prioritising those requiring urgent care or at an increased risk of dental disease. It is also noted that there will be a return to item of service fees and NHS patients charges, however, changes to the overall fee structure are expected, with more details to follow. With this in mind, now more than ever, it is crucial that dental practices maintain up to date and accurate financial management information and monitor their activities closely to ensure informed decisions can be made, where necessary.

The CDO also took the opportunity to thank all dental professionals for their support over this difficult time and signals further changes to NHS dental services. You can read the letter in full here.
