I was skeptical as to whether I made the right choice but the pathway I chose offers great hands on experience while studying, making it all the easier to relate your studies to work carried out in practice.

Why did you choose a career in Accounts?
I have always had a numbers background and it was something I was interested in when I was younger. My mental arithmetic has always been very good and although that may not count for a lot later in life, it gave me belief that I could handle anything numbers related.

Why did you choose the opportunity to join EQ over college or university?
I wanted to earn while learning and there are no guarantees of securing a job once I secured a degree.

Why did you choose EQ Accountants?
The firm has a very good reputation in the local area and my family have always used EQ, formally Carters, as their accountant.

What’s a day in the life of a Trainee Accounts Assistant like?
No day is the same. It varies from accounts preparation, VAT returns and tax returns. I like going into work not knowing what the day brings, rather than a repetitive cycle of the same work day in/day out.

What qualifications are you studying towards?
I achieved my ACCA CAT qualification in 2021 and I have now progressed onto professional ACCA studies.

What do you enjoy most about being a Trainee Accounts Assistant at EQ?
There is always someone that can help, and there is always someone who has been in your shoes in the past. It makes it a great place to learn as everyone is really supportive and keen to help.

What 3 qualities do you think a Trainee Accounts Assistant needs to have if they are to be successful?
The main quality for me would be the ability to work as part of a team. While we all have our own jobs, we treat every client like your own and are aiming towards the same goal. You also need to be able to manage your time well as every job has an allocated budget before the work begins. Finally, be patient. In this line of work, it is impossible to know everything, trust the process and enjoy seeing yourself progress.

Do you have any advice for those interested in applying to join the team?
Properly research before making a decision on university or going straight into a firm. I was skeptical as to whether I made the right choice but knowing what I know now, the pathway I chose is fantastic and offers great hands on experience while studying, making it all the easier to relate your studies to work carried out in practice.
