I really enjoyed the number of training opportunities open to you at EQ. Whilst continually learning with on the job training, you were also encouraged to participate in various other internal training programmes. At EQ, my colleagues were always happy to answer any question that arose.

Why did you choose a career in Accountancy?
I had taken Accountancy as a Standard Grade at school and really enjoyed it as a subject. I then began to look at this as a career choice and decided this was what I would like to do.

Why did you choose to apply to EQ Accountants to complete your professional qualification?
During the third year of my degree I was required to complete a 48-week placement and I was fortunate enough to secure my placement with EQ, within their Forfar office. My time in the office gave me a great insight in to the day to day to workings of an accountant, as well as getting to know the clients and staff. My colleagues were very friendly and enthusiastic, but most importantly they were eager to help and I knew this would be a benefit whilst I was training so, following my placement, I was fortunate enough to be offered a CA training contract with them, which I was delighted to accept and began in August 2008.

What is a day in the life of a CA Trainee like?
At EQ, every day as a trainee is different. From the reconciliation of bank accounts to the preparation of tax returns, you are involved in client affairs from the very start.

I was surprised at the level of client contact that was encouraged from an early stage.

What 3 qualities do you think a CA Trainee needs to have if they are to be successful?
A willingness to learn goes a long way! If you are keen to learn then people are always keen to help you and answer your questions.
Commitment. CA training will stand you in good stead for the future, make sure you take your training and studies seriously.
Enthusiasm. Being enthusiastic about your training and learning will ensure that you get the most from the experience.

Do you have any advice for those interested in applying for our graduate training vacancies this year?
Stand out from the crowd. With so many people applying for graduate positions you need to find something that makes you and your application different from everyone else.
