There’s a clear career progression pathway for anyone who wants to further their career, the framework is set out right from the start so you know what you need to achieve to move up the ladder.

Why did you make the move to EQ? What were you looking for?
I made the move to EQ as I was looking to become involved in a wider range of client services to further my learning and understanding. I was also looking for a firm with a clear career progression pathway and the location worked well for me, as I was previously travelling into Edinburgh every day.

What were your apprehensions in moving to EQ?  How have these been overcome?
I was only in my previous role for 18 months so I was aware that I would be faced with new software and procedures.

How different do you think EQ is (to the practice you were in previously)?
EQ are a very forward-thinking practice with an emphasis on the non-compliance services we can offer clients.

How do our working practices differ to the firm you were part of before?
At EQ, the portfolio of clients is spread across a number of partners which allows people to experience a range of different clients and viewpoints to help broaden their skill set. Having worked for one EQ partner in my previous firm and multiple partners in the firm I trained with, I can see the benefits and drawbacks to both ways of working.

What are you involved in at EQ that you weren’t involved in before? i.e. work other than compliance
I have been involved in the preparation of business valuation reports and have had the opportunity to attend meetings with potential clients, one of which has decided to move to EQ. I am also a member of the Healthcare team, allowing me to build up my knowledge in this area to assist clients.

What opportunities have been available to you since you joined EQ?
I have attended various networking events including attending the Xero Christmas lunch at the Kitchin restaurant as EQ are platinum partners with Xero.

Can you tell us a little about the relationships you have established with your clients since you joined?
I enjoy having more face to face client contact which helps build up relationships quickly.

What three things would you say to someone interested in making a move to EQ?

  1. Given the large variety of clients, there’s always opportunities to get involved with interesting non-compliance work which can really make a difference to a client.
  2. There’s a clear career progression pathway for anyone who wants to further their career, the framework is set out right from the start so you know what you need to achieve to move up the ladder.
  3. There’s a great mix of staff of all abilities across the office and lots of opportunities to supervise and assist students and help them develop as they start their accountancy careers.
