The partners have a vested interest in the success of our careers with EQ and as a result have introduced me to contacts and invited me along to meetings that they feel I will benefit from.

Why did you make the move to EQ? What were you looking for?
I was relocating permanently from Aberdeen to Dundee to settle down closer to family.  There were no time constraints on when I made this move, so it was important for me to find a firm that was the right fit for me and my career goals.  On paper, EQ appeared to be what I was looking for, and when I met two of the partners at my interview my instincts told me that this was a firm I could have a successful career with.

What were your apprehensions in moving to EQ?  How have these been overcome?
I have been lucky enough to have worked with strong, positive teams both where I trained and for 2 years post qualifying.  I was apprehensive about working with a new team, but overcame this quite quickly with how welcoming everyone at EQ was.

How different do you think EQ is (to the practice you were in previously)?
Prior to EQ I was working in one department within a larger firm, and I missed being involved in all client services e.g. accounts, tax, corporate finance and general business advisory.  At EQ, I have the opportunity to be involved with a range of services, as well as having exposure to a broader range of clients and industries.

How do our working practices differ to the firm you were part of before?
I think that being involved in all aspects of client work provides a better service to our clients.  There are team members with specialist knowledge who can become involved in specific pieces of work, but ultimately, we have oversight of all work carried out for our portfolio of clients.

What are you involved in at EQ that you weren’t involved in before? i.e. work other than compliance
Since starting with EQ over 2 years ago, I have had the opportunity to get involved with restructuring work for various companies and considering all tax implications associated with this. I have also assisted clients with projections for investing in new projects and for setting up new companies.

What opportunities have been available to you since you joined EQ?
Other than exposure to other technical services (along with compliance) I have had the opportunity to join various committees such as the Property and Construction team and the Fundraising committee, as well as develop good relationships with intermediaries.  The partners have a vested interest in the success of our careers with EQ and as a result have introduced me to contacts and invited me along to meetings that they feel I will benefit from.

Can you tell us a little about the relationships you have established with your clients since you joined?
Rather than being given a generic client portfolio on day one, I have grown my portfolio organically with clients I have carried out work for, have spoken to and met (where possible).  This has allowed me to continue to develop relationships I have already established and become a key point of contact when my clients have any queries.

What three things would you say to someone interested in making a move to EQ?

  1. The team are friendly and welcoming, with strong technical knowledge
  2. There is exposure to a range of services and opportunity to become involved in interesting ad hoc pieces of work
  3. As the firm continues to grow, there are opportunities for career progression and the support from the partners to develop your career in the direction you want.
