I think EQ is very different in terms of the opportunities that are available to staff, and in the way that staff are made to feel like an integral part of the firm.

Why did you make the move to EQ? What were you looking for?
I moved to EQ for two reasons. Firstly, I was looking for a more challenging role that would open doors for me in terms of my professional development, and secondly, I wanted to work for a firm that really values its staff.

What were your apprehensions in moving to EQ?  How have these been overcome?
Given I was leaving a lot of lovely colleagues behind, I was mostly apprehensive about meeting my new colleagues and the general working environment. I needn’t have worried though, the staff at EQ are all extremely friendly, supportive and we have a great laugh in the office (as well as working hard!), which makes EQ a really enjoyable place to work.

How different do you think EQ is (to the practice you were in previously)?
I think EQ is very different in terms of the opportunities that are available to staff, and in the way that staff are made to feel like an integral part of the firm.

How do our working practices differ to the firm you were part of before?
At EQ there is a more structured appraisal system which is hugely beneficial for your career progression. There is also a bigger emphasis on being a great business advisor, rather than just a great accountant. Staff are not only given technical training but we also receive training on wider business matters which enables us to offer more proactive, commercially sensible advice to our clients.

What are you involved in at EQ that you weren’t involved in before? i.e. work other than compliance
In my previous role I was primarily involved in compliance-only work. Now, most of my workload is advisory based and I am also involved in staff training, the promotion of our specialist tax groups and client recruitment.

What opportunities have been available to you since you joined EQ?
I have had the opportunity to specialise in the areas of tax that I am most interested in, and have been given the chance to lead a few of our specialist tax groups. I have also been given the opportunity, and the confidence, to deliver internal and external presentations, something which I would have never seen myself doing before moving to EQ.

Can you tell us a little about the relationships you have established with your clients since you joined?
Since joining EQ, I have been encouraged to spend time really getting to know my clients, to keep in regular contact with them and to deliver excellent service, which I believe has resulted in me building a great relationship with my clients.

What three things you would say to someone interested in making a move to EQ?

  1. You will have the opportunity to shape your own career.
  2. You will work with friendly and talented colleagues who can help you develop as a professional.
  3. With the number of service lines EQ offer and encourage staff to become involved in, no two days at work will be the same.
