I liked the idea of working up the ranks while earning money in the process. By the time I am fully qualified, I will already have a good amount of experience in practice.

How did your EQ journey begin?
I began my work experience at EQ when I was still at school. I applied for the Trainee Accounts Assistant position at the end of my 5th year at secondary school.

Why did you choose the opportunity to join EQ over college or university?
Learning on the job sounded better suited to me than sitting in a hall listening to a lecturer. I also liked the idea of working up the ranks while earning money in the process. By the time I am fully qualified, I will already have a good amount of experience in practice.

Why did you choose EQ Accountants?
Previously, I had completed my work experience with EQ and really enjoyed it – I had seen first-hand that it was a good place to work so applied for the Trainee Accounts Assistant job when it came up. When considering the school leavers programme, I particularly liked the idea of getting to do accounts/tax work right from the get-go. I had heard it was a social office which made me think I could fit right in.

What’s a day in the life of a Trainee Accounts Assistant like?
As a Trainee Accounts Assistant, I get exposure to a good mix of accounts and tax work, so each day can be different. I have grown my controller list which means I have a good number of clients to look after. Most of my time is therefore spent carrying out work on behalf of these clients.

As I am currently still working through my professional exams, I am supported with online lectures which take place during the working day. This means that some days are split between work and class.

What qualifications are you studying towards?
I’m working through my ACCA professional exams, with only the final few ones to go. I am hoping to have finished all the exams by the end of this year!

What do you enjoy most about being a Trainee Accounts Assistant at EQ?
I most enjoy the team environment and social side of working at EQ. There is a good atmosphere around the office which makes working more enjoyable. We also take part in external networking events such as Business Fives which give us a chance to make new contacts and mix with members of staff from the different offices.

What 3 qualities do you think a Trainee Accounts Assistant needs to have if they are to be successful?
Hardworking, good communicator, enthusiastic.
