For someone with a non-relevant degree like myself, I’d say it feels like a total immersion course, where you’re constantly learning and developing an understanding of the work.

Why did you choose a career in Accountancy?
After studying psychology at University, I wasn’t too sure what path to take. I tried going down the teaching route but preferred the idea of having a little more control over my day-to-day work so I decided to have a rethink. I’ve always enjoyed working with numbers and liked the idea of working towards a professional qualification so I thought I’d try out accountancy and I’ve enjoyed the challenge so far!

Why did you choose to apply to EQ Accountants to complete your professional qualification?
I liked the idea of working for a firm where you can get to know all of your colleagues – it’s a really pleasant atmosphere (which I felt right from the interview) and everyone’s willing to help where they can. I’ve always felt really involved in the work I do, which makes each working day so much more interesting.

What is a day in the life of a CA Trainee like?
Extremely varied! For someone with a non-relevant degree like myself, I’d say it feels like a total immersion course, where you’re constantly learning and developing an understanding of the work. On a day-to-day basis, I find myself working through a variety of different jobs and learning from colleagues, with various periods of study thrown in throughout the year.

What did you enjoy most about being a CA Trainee at EQ?
I’ve really enjoyed how friendly the Firm is and how willing everyone is to help. It can be daunting jumping into a new career, but with the atmosphere at EQ I’ve found it an enjoyable journey so far.

What did you find the most surprising during your training with EQ?
I think the pace of learning has surprised me most. When I first started, I really didn’t have any background knowledge of accounting or finance and it felt a little overwhelming at times but due to the amount of study, help and experience you get over a relatively short period of time, things start to click into place pretty quickly!

What 3 qualities do you think a CA Trainee needs to have if they are to be successful?
A willingness to learn (and an enjoyment of learning), good time management (to manage work and study) and drive/self-motivation to meet your personal targets/goals.

Do you have any advice for those interested in applying for our graduate training vacancies this year?
I’d say to go for it! If you want a friendly firm who want you to do well, then I wouldn’t go past EQ. Make sure to show your personality when going through the application process.
