At EQ, our EQ Accounting team help you manage the financial and operational side of your business – allowing you to focus on the important day-to-day business activities. Their range of services include bookkeeping, payroll, VAT compliance, management accounting, and, for some clients, the full outsourcing of their financial record-keeping.

We are currently looking to expand our growing Payroll team, so to give you an idea of what life is like as part of the team, we asked one of them about their journey.

Eilidh McFarlane, Payroll Assistant

Eilidh joined us in June 2018 as a Payroll Assistant based in our Dundee office. She joined with no previous Payroll experience but has quickly found her feet through hard work and support from her colleagues.

We asked her a few questions about why she joined and what it’s like to work as part of our Payroll team.

How did your EQ/EQ journey begin?

I left school at the end of 4th year, unsure of what I wanted to do as a long-term career. I undertook a hairdressing apprenticeship, and although I enjoyed it, I felt that it wasn’t challenging me enough academically. After completing my assessments, I had gained good insight into how to run a business and I wanted to learn further. I then began a fast track into an HNC Accounting & Business at college and at this time I had noticed a job advertisement for a position at EQ as a Payroll Assistant. I thought that this was a fantastic opportunity and I was keen to apply.

What do you think of working at EQ?

EQ is a great place to work. As soon as you walk in everyone is so welcoming and friendly. Even when you are working at a junior level, you are given lots of responsibility. Having an open plan office helps you feel comfortable to approach anyone, even Partners. Although EQ is a division of EQ you get to work closely with other colleagues on clients you share together – this improves teamwork which is a vital part of the role.

How were you supported when you started your new role?

I was nervous when I started as I didn’t have any prior payroll experience but straight away, I felt part of a team who were willing to answer any questions I had. I have been given a number of development opportunities ranging from courses, webinars and in-house training. All staff are willing to give up time to provide a one on one training session.

What’s a day in the life of an EQ team member like?

A day in the life of an EQ team member is very fast-paced and no two days are the same! Working as a Payroll Assistant consists of dealing with a large number of companies, all with different deadlines and needs. Every day I learn something new.

What do you enjoy the most about your role in EQ?

I enjoy the wide variety of clients I have and the sense of accomplishment when I am able to meet their requirements. I thrive on coming into work to a different challenge every day and I enjoy the balance of working as part of a team but also independently. I began doing solely payroll however now I am also doing bookkeeping and VAT returns which is a new challenge I never expected but thoroughly enjoy!

What 3 qualities do you think someone needs to have if they are to be successful in EQ/EQ?

I think three qualities for a member of the EQ team is to be hard working, a team player and have good time management skills.

Do you have any advice for those interested in applying to join the team?

The advice I would give to people who are considering applying for a job at EQ is to do your research into the firm and prepare for your interview. Be determined and committed to working hard but also have an open mindset.
